Consider the iconic biblical narrative of crossing the Red Sea. For the Israelites, the prospect must have been the epitome of a terrifying predicament. Hemmed in by an expansive and seemingly impassable body of water, with the terrifying knowledge of Pharaoh's pursuing army intent on their destruction, their situation appeared utterly hopeless. The sea represented an insurmountable obstacle, a natural barrier that defied any logical means of traversal. Behind them lay a relentless enemy, driven by a desire to steal their newfound freedom, to kill their hopes, and to ultimately destroy them. Their very liberation, the future they had dared to believe in and tentatively step towards, was now hanging precariously in the balance, threatened by the impossibility of escape from the very force they had barely possessed the faith to leave behind.
In that moment of profound vulnerability, hope must have felt like a distant and fading ember. The longer they stood at the water’s edge, the more acutely they felt the grip of an impenetrable fear. The dreams they held, the longings for a life free from bondage, seemed destined to be extinguished before they could truly begin. The weight of their circumstances pressed down on them, threatening to crush their spirits and extinguish any flicker of optimism.
Yet, in the face of such daunting odds, something truly miraculous occurred. If past encounters have taught us that certain individuals or forces are intent on causing harm, our human instinct is to expect that they will relentlessly pursue their destructive aims. We tend to rely on our accumulated knowledge and experience with tangible threats, much like the formidable Red Sea, which possesses the inherent power to end life. However, making a conscious spiritual connection compels us to adopt a different posture: to stop our frantic efforts to control the situation, to drop the weight of our preconceived notions, and to attentively listen for divine guidance. It requires us to act on what the Spirit prompts us to do and when, regardless of how things might outwardly appear or how contrary it might seem to our logical understanding.
The Cost of Inaction and the Reward of Faith
Indeed, we must ask ourselves: What is the true cost of inaction? When faced with a seemingly impossible situation, what is the greater risk – to remain stagnant, clinging to the familiar even if it spells certain doom, or to take a step forward, to embrace the unknown path that presents itself, however improbable it may seem? For the Israelites, the answer became clear. They began to cross the parted sea. As they moved through this miraculous corridor, the awareness that their pursuers were still advancing must have lingered. Yet again, divine intervention manifested. The waters that had been held back began to surge forward, closing in upon the pursuing army. In this dramatic climax, those who were determined to steal their hope, to drag them back into the chains of servitude, were engulfed and washed away by the very force that had provided the Israelites’ salvation.
In the midst of what must have felt like the ultimate trial, the Israelites witnessed the wondrous and decisive work of God. The very element He had created, the water that had been miraculously parted to save them and usher them closer to their destined freedom, also became the instrument of destruction for those who sought to destroy them. This powerful demonstration revealed that what God uses for our deliverance can also be the very means by which our adversaries are overcome.
This historical account holds profound lessons for our own lives. When God calls us to progress, to step out of our comfort zones and move forward towards our purpose, we must be mindful and understand that there is often a profound safety to be found in the journey itself. Over-reliance on our limited human knowledge and understanding can, in fact, be detrimental to our well-being, blinding us to possibilities that lie beyond our current comprehension.
Too often, we become stubbornly attached to our so-called knowledge and understanding, leading us to make short-sighted and even foolish decisions that can ultimately cost us dearly. In the contemporary world, there is a prevalent tendency to place unwavering belief and trust in a multitude of things, yet often neglecting or outright rejecting the divine. It is then no wonder that individuals find themselves grappling with situations that either fail to improve or become increasingly inconsistent and unstable.
If God is presented as the only truly consistent and unchanging force in the universe, then how can we, in our pursuit of stability and fulfillment, constantly place our reliance on that which has proven to be inherently inconsistent and unreliable?
Part of our fundamental challenge lies in a limited understanding of God’s nature. We have, at times, inadvertently confined the expansive reality of Christ’s presence and purpose on earth, diminishing it to merely a human experience, albeit an extraordinary one. We have, perhaps, forgotten the inherent power of who He was – the Son of God, divinely sent, and the profound reasons behind His incarnation.
While we can glean invaluable wisdom from every aspect of Christ’s earthly journey, one of the most extraordinary and consistently demonstrated principles we can learn is His unwavering reliance on God, His Father, for absolutely everything.
This understanding marks a crucial starting point for our spiritual growth. We are invited to cultivate and connect with the same profound spiritual relationship that existed between Christ and God as we delve deeper into the teachings of the Gospel.
Following Christ's Example
The empowering declaration, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” becomes a guiding principle. But how do we practically connect with this truth, especially at the initial stages of our journey when we may be wrestling with doubts, uncertainties, or a fragile faith?
The initial step lies in allowing the narrative of Christ’s life and the powerful example He set to be what we hold onto. When confronted with adversity, His consistent response was to look towards heaven, to connect with His Father in a posture of pure vulnerability, laying bare the entirety of His challenges and needs. Similarly, God’s presence in our lives may serve as a powerful reminder – a reminder of past deliverances, of His faithfulness, and of the promise that our future holds possibilities far greater than both our past and our present circumstances. The deep-seated yearning to break free from the constraints of the past, or the compelling vision of a more fulfilling future, may be the very impetus we need to risk stepping out in faith. Nevertheless, the crucial steps remain the same: to stop our own striving, to earnestly seek divine guidance, and then to discover the specific provision and direction we need in Him, just as Christ so clearly demonstrated.
Even while in the midst of our personal “Red Sea” passages, it is vital to lift our gaze and witness the wondrous works of God’s hands. We will begin to perceive how His unique way of providing escape and ensuring our safe passage often involves the very elements that threaten to overwhelm us. In these moments of realization, we can find genuine joy and wholeheartedly rejoice, knowing that we no longer need to be held captive by fear. Instead, we can embrace a new and profound sense of peace that flows from placing our complete trust in God’s unfailing love and power.
Fear is a paralyzing force that will inevitably cause us to remain stuck in our current predicaments. Conversely, faith, though it may require an initial step into the unknown, will ultimately usher in a deep and lasting peace. We may not immediately witness the tangible results of our faith when faced with difficult decisions, but as we courageously progress, the evidence of God’s faithfulness will become increasingly apparent. Moreover, our faith itself will be strengthened and deepened as we embrace every opportunity to trust God throughout our journey. In time, we will cultivate a level of faith that not only propels us forward but actively dismantles the very obstacles that once seemed insurmountable.
Stepping Into God's Calling: A Journey of Faith and Action

Now, engage in a conscious act of surrender and realignment: Stop, Drop, and Roll.
Stop: Humbly pause amidst the busyness and noise of your day to intentionally listen for God’s still, small voice. In the quietude, seek His perspective on what lies before you.
Drop: Release the limiting belief that the forces arrayed against you, whether internal doubts or external pressures, are more powerful than the Almighty God. Consciously cast off the weight of fear and unbelief, acknowledging God’s sovereignty and ultimate authority.
Roll: Following God’s guidance and the stirring within your heart, step forward in faith and obedience. Embrace the actions He is prompting you to take, even if they seem daunting or unclear. Trust in His leading and move in the direction He illuminates.
As you actively engage in this journey, remember to pause and lift your gaze. Take in the panorama of God’s wondrous works unfolding around you. Recognize His hand in the seemingly small victories and the broader strokes of His plan. Allow yourself to be awestruck by His faithfulness and power.
